We are sad to hear of the death of Fritz Oser (1937-2020), who was a long-time, deeply engaged member of AME and a consistent supporter of our efforts. At his death, he was emeritus Professor of Educational Psychology and General Education in the Department of Educational Sciences at the University of Fribourg, Switzerland, where he had also served as dean of the philosophical faculty and president of the department. A fellow at Harvard University under Lawrence Kohlberg, Fritz spent his career working in the field of moral and religious development, extending his applications to the field of education and student learning. His academic reach was broad, and he published multiple books and articles, shaping a range of fields with the creativity of his ideas..He is a recipient of many awards, including the AME Kuhmerker award (2003). He gave the Kohlberg Memorial Address at AME in 1995 (titled Kohlberg’s Dormant Ghosts, or Questions that Kohlberg Never Resolved and Which His Colleagues Never Addressed). Always willing to serve in what role was asked of him, he coordinated the 2006 AME conference in Fribourg Switzerland. The theme of that conference “Getting Involved: Global Citizenship Development and Sources of Moral Values” is one of the themes of his life. He was extremely involved, and had many graduate students, some of whom now call AME home. A pleasure to know, the host of many entertaining evenings in his beautiful home with his wife Gretl, Fritz will be greatly missed.
