Campus and Local Info

Queensborough is a community college that has leaned into its mission to provide a high quality and affordable public education to all students. It has more than 10,000 students and 775 faculty. It offers 50+ academic programs on a 37-acre campus with 10 major buildings, among which is the QCC Art Gallery, and the Kupferberg Holocaust Center, a research and teaching center that includes an exhibit.  It is not a museum but provides a powerful learning experience in which you may want to engage.

All meetings will be on campus, primarily in the Medical Arts/Science Center. Registration will be in the Student Union, the Film Club will meet in the Humanities Building (Theater) , the Poster Session and the Reception will be in the Student Union.

If you are driving to the conference each day, you will need to notify us so that we can provide parking on campus. Please contact Dr. Phyllis Curtis-Tweed at  phyllis.curtis-tweed@qcc.cuny.edu

Food

The conference will provide gratis daily continental breakfast, lunch, and light refreshments at receptions.  We will ask you to sign-up for lunches at registration.  Your hotel may or may not offer or provide breakfast. Please be sure to check your reservation.

You will be on your own for dinner but there are many, many options in Bayside. Bayside is known for an array of international cuisines at affordable prices.  You may decide to venture into Manhattan or out to Long Island for a meal.  Should you decide to stay at your hotel, you can either dine locally or order in.  Many restaurants deliver for a delivery fee.

 Getting Around

The conference hotel, The Inn at Great Neck, is about 4 miles (about a 20-minute ride) from the college. Shuttle service will be provided to the college.

The Best Western and Adria hotels are located about .4 miles (about a 15-minute walk) from Queensborough Community College.  The walk to campus takes you past Oakland Lake, a nice area popular with residents.  The College will provide limited shuttle service from these hotels because it is within walking distance.

Our alternate hotels, The Courtyard Marriott and the Fairfield Inn, in Fresh Meadows, side by side, immediately off highway 495, are located about 3 miles or 10-15 minutes from the campus.  Limited shuttle service will be provided to these hotels. The Q30 bus also goes to Queensborough Community College from these locations. See this schedule for bus time information. Be sure to check the MTA website closer to the date for any changes or updates. You can also get an Uber, which would cost about $21 depending on the time of day.

A shuttle service schedule will be provided at the conference, and on the app the day before the conference begins.

For further information, see the “hotels” button on amenetwork.org/2024 or call the hotel.

Getting to the hotels from the airports

The closest airports are JFK and LGA airports, which are about 30 minutes away from Bayside.  Newark, also popular with travelers, is about an hour away. Our time and cost estimates depend on traffic and/or time of day and may vary.

The best options for traveling from the airports are Uber or Yellow taxi.  There are designated areas at the airports for picking up the Uber or there is a taxi stand for the yellow taxi.  Average costs from JFK or LGA start at about $55 depending on the time of day.  If you would like to coordinate a ride share with other conference attendees, add your flight information to the “Airport Ride Sharing Group” under the community tab in the Whova app.

Interested in taking the train or a bus? It is possible to travel from the airport to the hotel. There are a variety of routes and combinations by train and or/bus so the best way to plan your route is to use google maps on your phone.  Please be aware that travelling by public transportation will take longer to get to your destination.  Carrying luggage on public transportation can be challenging.

Getting into Manhattan

Once you are at QCC or your hotel, take the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) to Penn Station–34 St. The trip to the LIRR station can be a short uber ride or longer walk depending on your starting point.

From QCC: Uber/Bus to Bayside Station

From Inn at Great Neck: Walk (5 mins.)  to Great Neck Station

From the Adria and Best Western: Walk (15 mins.)/Uber (5 mins.) to Bayside Station

From Courtyard Marriott/Fairfield Inn: Uber (10 mins.)  to Bayside Station

The train ride to Penn Station takes approximately 30 minutes. Once you’ve arrived at Penn Station, walk/subway/taxi/uber to your destination in Manhattan.

For the most up-to-date train information and to purchase LIRR tickets, download MTA and TrainTime apps. If you do plan on taking the subway once in Manhattan, use google maps and the MTA app for the most accurate directions and train information.
