AME statement on the war in Ukraine
We are shocked by the hostile invasion of Ukraine and the extreme violence with which Ukrainian citizens are confronted. Thousands of innocent lives are lost and millions of Ukrainians have had to flee the country in search of safety, a roof over their head or food, for themselves and their children. Most schools are closed, community life has come to a halt, universities cannot function. This is a humanitarian disaster caused by extreme immoral behaviour.
AME is not a political organisation and cannot undertake political action. However, we can and do actively reach out to our Ukrainian colleagues – academics and teachers and express our solidarity with them. We hope that peace in the middle of Europe will be soon be restored, but realise that the impact of this war will last for many years to come and will affect many people around the world.
