17th asia pacific moral education conference

Moral Development and Moral Education in Global Transition

july 20-23 2022

CONFERENCE PROGRAM

Celebrating 50 years of the Journal of Moral Education

The conference theme speaks to the social, political, and cultural challenges and opportunities for moral education and development at a time of global transition. More specifically, concerns abound about the status of moral education in times of rising post-truth populism and nationalism, and in the context of a pandemic, climate change and political instability. How do current moral educational practices guide civic engagement and pedagogy towards the public good? How do public and private values inform a social ethos of moral responsibility, agency, and citizenship, and can they do so across cultural borders? To what extent is, or should moral psychology be, politicized? And what does it mean to talk about the "politics of moral education", globally or nationally?

The Association for Moral Education (AME), the Asia-Pacific Network for Moral Education (APNME), and the Journal of Moral Education Trust (JMET) invite researchers, practitioners, and activists to engage in critical, academic dialogue in order to understand the relevance of social, political, religious and cultural interactions with philosophy, psychology, sociology and moral education at this time of global transition. As this conference celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Journal of Moral Education, a recurring theme will be about the lessons learned from the last 50 years of scholarship for future challenges.

+ More on Travel Grants

Travel Grants are available to assist low-income individuals such as students and college, university, and research institute faculty members from developing countries (as identified by the IMF in their low and middle income categories) to present their work at the forthcoming conference of the Association for Moral Education. Only those with papers that have been accepted for presentation are eligible to receive a travel grant, regardless of the presentation format (paper presentation, poster session, symposium participant). Preference is given to those with financial need and to young scholars, a term that includes post-docs and faculty within 5 years of finishing his/her degree. Applicants must be a citizen of the developing country, and must reside in the country at the time of application and during the selection process, except if they are full-time students. Applicants must be proficient in spoken and written English.

The grant reimburses for early bird registration, accommodation, and travel to a maximum of $1000 USD. Lesser awards may be given. Applicants pay for expenses and receive reimbursement, but only when receipts for their expenses are provided to the award committee. (Fees for ticket changes or insurance, e.g., are not reimbursed.)

The AME treasurer reimburses grant recipients via a check if at all possible, or by a wire to a bank outside of the US if necessary. Information for bank wires must be typed (and not handwritten) and double-checked with the recipients’s bank before being provided to the award committee. The recipient will be charged a fee if the information is incorrect.

Award recipients are selected by the Conference Chair, in consultation with the AME Treasurer and President.

To apply, the applicant should send the following information to the email address: AMEExecBoard@gmail.com. The subject line of the email should be “Travel Grant Application”.

  1. The student or academic should e-mail a letter of application and information that demonstrates financial need to the email address for the conference award committee. Please note in this email whether other funds are available, whether the applicant has applied for potential funds, and whether appropriate funding exists at their institution.
  2. The applicant also must enclose a photocopy of his or her university identification card or equivalent document.
